Manila, Philippines, 15 July 2024 – In partnership with Singapore-based gallery Art Agenda, S.E.A., Quisumbing Torres proudly hosted “Encounters: Post-War & Modern Philippine & Indonesian Art' last 3 to 6 July 2024. Encounters is an exhibition of more than two dozen rare and quality examples of Philippine and Indonesian post-war art by many of the most illustrious Philippine and Indonesian artists such as Affandi, Ang Kiu Kok, Arturo Luz, Fernando Amorsolo, and Anita Magsaysay-Ho showcased within the corporate office of Quisumbing Torres in Bonifacio Global City, Manila. The event comprised of private guided tours, special presentations and by-invite art & law discussion sessions.

Day 1 (3 July, 2024)

The vernissage, was held on 3 July 2024 (Wednesday) from 4 to 8 PM. The opening was graced by guest of honour Agus Widjojo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of The Republic of Indonesia to The Republic of The Philippines. The program, hosted by associate Lirene De los Reyes, included opening remarks by Dennis Quintero, the lead partner from Quisumbing Torres. Zineng Wang, founder of Art Agenda, S.E.A., officially opened the exhibition.

Day 2 (4 July, 2024)

The event held its first by-invite roundtable discussion ‘Managing Artistic Legacies: Strategies for Artists’ Estates and Private Museums’ where artist and illustrator Hannah Liongoren introduced her family's multi-faceted involvement in art – from her pioneering dealer-gallerist mother, Norma Liongoren to her abstractionist painter father, Alfredo Liongoren – and shared how she and her siblings are managing the legacy of her parents. Art Agenda provided a brief framework to the management of artistic legacies. Quisumbing Torres partners – Alain Charles Veloso (Corporate & Commercial / M&A Assistant Practice Group Head), Kristine Mercado-Tamayo (Tax Practice Group Head), and Frederick Jose (Partner, Intellectual Property, Data and Technology Practice Group), as well as Rodrigo Quimbo (Of Counsel, Quisumbing Torres) – shared their observations and insights in this hour-long session.

The open session presentation ‘ASEAN Art Markets Unveiled: Overview of the Southeast Asian Art Ecology’ was led by Southeast Asian art expert Zineng Wang from Art Agenda. Wineng provided a survey of the different art scenes and art markets across ten ASEAN member countries, focusing on key institutions, artists and other artworld players, as well as potential, challenges and connections between each of the scenes.

Day 3 (5 July, 2024)

A complimentary art valuation service was offered to both Quisumbing Torres and Art Agenda guests who wish to have their art pieces and antiques checked of its condition, appraisal, insurance valuation, as well as an opportunity to consign to auction, by specialists Ken Mendiola of Lumen Auctions and Wang Zineng of Art Agenda.

The special open session ‘Recollecting A Maestro: Life & Works of Fernando C. Amorsolo’ was with Sylvia Amorsolo-Lazo, daughter of Fernando C. Amorsolo, who spoke on the life and works of her father, Fernando Amorsolo, with examples of artworks and memorabilia from the Foundation.

The presentation was followed by another by-invite roundtable discussion on the ‘Inheritance of Art: Maximizing Value in Estate Planning with Heirs of Fernando Amorsolo, the First National Artist of the Philippines’. Sylvia Amorsolo-Lazo, daughter of Fernando C. Amorsolo, spoke about the foundation dedicated to the legacy of the artist set up in 2003 and now in its 21st year of existence. Lawyers from Quisumbing Torres, Alain Charles Veloso (Partner, Corporate & Commercial / M&A Assistant Practice Group Head), Maria Ana Camila Jacinto-Lagustan (Partner, Tax Practice Group), and Felicisimo Agas III (Associate, Intellectual Property, Data and Technology Practice Group), as well as Rodrigo Quimbo (Of Counsel, Quisumbing Torres) elaborated on the legal frameworks and existing tools available to implement estate plans, including trusts, donations, gifts. Art Agenda specialists provided a comparative framework and introduced artists' foundations in Indonesia and in the West dedicated to the estates of other significant 20th century artists.

Day 4 (6 July, 2024)

On the last day of the exhibition, an open session presentation on ‘The Ultimate Reference to Collecting Modern Art’ by Southeast Asian art expert Wang Zineng equipped anyone interested in collecting modern art with the ultimate Philippine mnemonic on what to look out for in one's collecting journey.
